Volkswagen’s Electric Evolution: The Anticipated 2026 ID.8 SUV

January 7th, 2025 by

Volkswagen is expanding its electric mobility offerings with the 2026 ID.8, a three-row SUV designed for larger families and those who want more space without sacrificing sustainability. It will compete with the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9 and is Volkswagen’s play to meet the growing demand for spacious electric vehicles in the US market.

Design and Size
No official images of the ID.8 yet but it’s expected to take cues from the ID. Series, particularly the ID.6 available in China. The ID.8 will be bigger than the ID.6 and will match the size of the Volkswagen Atlas which is around 198.3 inches long. Americans love bigger vehicles and this size increase will cater to that. The design will be cab-forward to maximize interior space by utilizing the efficiency of electric vehicle platforms. This will not only be more comfortable for passengers but also more aerodynamic which will improve the overall efficiency of the vehicle.

Interior and Comfort
The ID.8 will have a three-row seating configuration to accommodate up to 7 passengers. Without a transmission tunnel, a benefit of electric vehicles, the floor will be flat and more legroom and comfort for all occupants. High-quality materials, advanced infotainment, and customizable ambient lighting will create a modern and cozy cabin. A panoramic roof may also be available to make the interior feel more spacious.

Performance and Powertrain
Volkswagen hasn’t released any details on the ID.8’s powertrain yet but it’s expected to be available in rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations like other ID. models. The rear-wheel-drive version may have a single motor while the all-wheel-drive version may have two motors for more performance and traction. The ID.8 will likely use Volkswagen’s MEB+ platform, an upgraded version of the current MEB architecture that can support higher power output and better efficiency. This platform can accommodate battery packs that can achieve a longer range, one of the biggest concerns of electric vehicle buyers.

Battery and Range
The ID.8 will have multiple battery options to suit different customer needs. Similar to the ID.6 which has 58.0 kWh and 77.0 kWh battery packs in China, the ID.8 may have similar or larger battery packs. The bigger battery pack may have a range of up to 365 miles on a single charge but official figures for the ID.8 are not out yet. Fast charging will be standard so you can recover significant range in a short time making the vehicle more practical for long-distance travel.

Technology and Features
As Volkswagen is all about technology the ID.8 will have a full suite of driver assistance systems including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking. A big infotainment screen, possibly 12 inches, will be the central hub of the vehicle controls with features like navigation, entertainment, and connectivity options. Smartphone integration, over-the-air software updates, and customizable user profiles will also be part of the tech features so the ID.8 will meet the needs of today’s consumers.

Market Positioning and Pricing
The ID.8 will be a key player in Volkswagen’s electric vehicle lineup targeting customers who want a spacious family-oriented SUV with zero emissions. Pricing will start around $45,000 and go up to $55,000 depending on the trim and options. The pricing will be competitive in the segment with a balance of affordability and features.

Production and Localization
Volkswagen will heavily localize the production of the ID.8 in the US as part of its strategy to strengthen its presence in North America. This will reduce production costs and allow Volkswagen to better cater to the needs and preferences of American customers. Local production will also enable Volkswagen to respond faster to market demands and regulatory changes so the ID.8 will remain relevant and competitive in the ever-changing automotive landscape.

Competition
The ID.8 is coming at a time when the electric SUV market is getting crowded. Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9 are also gunning for the three-row electric SUV segment each with their own strengths and features. Volkswagen’s experience in vehicle manufacturing and its commitment to electric mobility makes the ID.8 a force to be reckoned with in this emerging segment.

As Volkswagen expands its electric vehicle lineup the ID.8 is a big step towards catering to the diverse needs of customers who are looking for sustainable transportation solutions. With its expected space, performance, and tech the ID.8 will make a big splash in the market when it arrives in 2026.
