How to Check Your Tire Pressure in San Bernardino, California

Improperly inflated tires can cause a number of issues. Make sure you know how to check your tire pressure and properly inflate your tires to take on your upcoming summertime adventures with confidence. Under- or overinflated tires can lead to decreased fuel efficiency and increased or uneven wear.

To check your tire pressure:

  1. Check your owner’s manual to learn the correct tire pressure for your tires. Sometimes these numbers can differ between front and rear tires.

  2. Unscrew the valve cap and place it somewhere secure. It is important to check your tire pressure when the tires are cold.

  3. Press your tire gauge onto the valve stem

  4. Read the  tire pressure on the gauge. It may be a good idea to make a note of the pressure of each tire as you go around for adjusting your tire pressure later

It is important to note that over inflating your tires can be just as detrimental as under inflating tires. Tires that are overinflated do not make as much contact with the road because they are stiff and unyielding. In addition, they can be damaged more easily if they hit potholes or road debris.

To properly fill and adjust your tire pressure:

  1. Begin by parking your car so the compressor hose can reach all 4 tires

  2. Remove the stem caps and place them to the side

  3. Turn on the compressor

  4. Press the hose fitting down on the valve stem and press the lever. You should feel the air flowing through the hose and hear the tire inflating.

  5. Check that you have the correct air pressure by releasing the inflation lever. The gauge on the hose fitting will display if you have approximately enough air pressure.

  6. After inflating all 4 tires, recheck the tire pressure with your tire gauge. If the pressure is too high, press the gauge down just far enough to release some air from the tire, then check again.

  7. One the tire pressures are correct, replace the valve caps on all of the tires.
